Daegu championships to inspire S. Korean athletes: Lee
DAEGU, Aug. 27 (Yonhap) -- The 2011 World Championships in Athletics will greatly help develop South Korea's less competitive athletics sport, President Lee Myung-bak said on Saturday.
"In fact, South Korea is feeble in athletics sports ... this event is very valuable because it is certain to contribute to the development of the sport in the country," Lee said in a luncheon speech marking the opening of the championships in the southeastern city of Daegu.
Although South Korean athletes may not triumph in the championships, Lee said, he is sure that they would be inspired to win medals in the next championships.
Lee hosted the luncheon for International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge and Lamine Diack, the president of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF).
The Daegu championships will run for nine days until Sept. 4.
