N.K. leader attends banquet honoring his 'successful' trip to Russia, China

SEOUL, Aug. 29 (Yonhap) -- North Korean leader Kim Jong-il attended a banquet held to congratulate him on his "successful" recent visits to Russia and China, the North's state media said Monday.
The banquet was hosted by the Central Military Commission of the ruling Workers' Party and the National Defense Commission, according to a brief dispatch by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), monitored in Seoul. It did not mention where or when the event took place.
Kim returned home on Saturday after an eight-day trip aboard his special armored train across Russia's Far East and northeastern China. The trip included summit talks with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev near the Siberian city of Ulan-Ude on Wednesday and tours of various industrial sites in both countries.
The reclusive leader reportedly agreed to Moscow's proposal for a gas pipeline linking Russia's Far East to South Korea via North Korean territory, and offered to impose a moratorium on tests and the production of nuclear weapons if the six-party denuclearization talks reopen.
The multilateral talks, involving the two Koreas, Russia, China, Japan and the United States, aim to dismantle the North's nuclear weapons program in exchange for economic and political aid. They have been stalled for more than two years due to a North Korean boycott and tensions over the communist state's missile and nuclear weapons tests in 2009. Resumption of the talks has been further hampered by the North's deadly military provocations against the South last year, which killed a total of 50 South Koreans.
Kim's youngest son and heir-apparent, Kim Jong-un, was also present at the banquet along with other senior officials, including Ri Yong-ho, chief of the general staff of the (North) Korean People's Army, defense chief Kim Yong-chun, and Kim Kyong-hui, the leader's sister who currently heads the Workers' Party's light industry department, the dispatch said.
