Slovakia to celebrate 67th anniversary of anti-Nazi uprising
PRAGUE, August 29 (Itar-Tass) -- Slovakia will celebrate the main
national holiday - the 67th anniversary of the Slovak National Uprising on
Monday. Slovakia recalls with a deep gratitude that Soviet citizens were
fighting together with the Slovaks in guerilla units. Many of them were
awarded with the orders and medals of that country.
"Dozens of thousands of Red Army warriors and civilians of numerous
nationalities of the Soviet Union perished for the freedom of the Slovak
people during the national uprising and liberation of the country. Their
feat will live forever in our hearts," press secretary of the Slovak
president Marek Trubac told Itar-Tass.
The Slovak National Uprising was a bright page in the history of the
anti-Nazi Resistance. The uprising broke out in central Slovakia on August
29, 1944 and spread on a greater part of the country almost immediately.
The Bratislava historians noted that more than 500,000 Slovaks
participated in the uprising.
Hitler dispatched the elite Nazi and Waffen SS forces to suppress the
uprising, which was spreading rapidly in the deep rear of the territories,
which the Nazi troops occupied. The Soviet Union saved the Slovak people
from cracking down their national uprising. Thanks to a comprehensive
intensive assistance and mostly to a rapid offensive operation of the
Soviet Army to save the rebellious Slovak people the country was liberated
from the Nazi occupation.
Banska Bystrica will be the venue for the main celebrations on the
occasion of the 67th anniversary of the Slovak National Uprising. The
Slovak Resistance headquartered in this city, which is the metropolis in
central Slovakia. The ceremonies to commemorate the war heroes are also
scheduled in Bratislava and other Slovak settlements. The top officials of
the republic, the leaders of the political parties, the chiefs of local
authorities, veterans of the Second World War, representatives of Russia
and other CIS states will attend these commemoration events.
