Iranian Parliament Ready to Pursue Imam Musa al-Sadr's Fate

TEHRAN (FNA)- A senior Iranian legislator announced the parliament's preparedness to pursue the fate of the Iran-born Lebanese Shiite cleric and leader, Imam Musa al-Sadr, who is believed to be in the prisons of former Libyan dictator Muammar al-Qaddafi.
All concerned sides should adopt necessary measures to clarify the fate of Sadr after the fugitive Libyan ruler Muammar Gaddafi, Head of the parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Alaeddin Boroujerdi said on Sunday.

He made the remarks in a meeting with a delegation representing the Lebanese Amal Movement, headed by Khalil Hamdan, in the Iranian capital of Tehran.

Boroujerdi emphasized that the parliament will make its utmost efforts to obtain "precise information" about the abducted cleric, and noted that the commission has also assigned one of its members to pursue Sadr's case.

Al-Sadr an Iranian-born Lebanese philosopher spent many years of his life in Lebanon as a religious and political leader, before he went missing during a trip to Libya at the invitation of Muammar al-Qaddafi.

In August 1978, al-Sadr departed for Libya with two companions to meet officials of Libyan leader Muammar al-Qaddafi's government. They were never heard from again, and many believe they met with foul play at the hands of Qaddafi.

Libya has consistently denied responsibility, claiming that al-Sadr and his companions left Libya for Italy in 1978. However, others claim that al-Sadr is still alive and is being held in a secret jail in Libya.

Rome has persistently said that Sadr never arrived in Italy on the alleged flight.
