Big Bang member cleared of charges regarding deadly car accident
By Oh Seok-min
SEOUL, Aug. 29 (Yonhap) -- Popular boy band Big Bang's key member has been cleared of suspicion regarding a motorcyclist's death in a midnight car accident in Seoul in May, prosecutors said Monday.
Kang Dae-sung, known just as Daesung in the entertainment industry, has been under investigation after being booked without detention on May 31 after he accidentally ran over a man who crashed his bike moments before on Yanghwa Bridge in western Seoul at around 1:00 a.m.
But prosecutors said they have failed to secure decisive evidence to prove the entertainer's liability in the motorcyclist's death.
Several minutes before being hit by the Kang's car, the victim slammed into a street lamp while intoxicated, and collapsed on the street, according to police.
Kang, 22, told police that he did not see the man. The celebrity was sober, though he was speeding, police added.
After months of extensive investigation into the exact cause and the time of the man's death, the Seoul Southern District Prosecutors' Office said it has decided not to seek any criminal charges against Kang.
"No definitive evidence was found to suggest the motorcyclist was alive before being hit by Daesung's vehicle," chief prosecutor Hong Soon-bo said. "He may have already been dead beforehand due to multiple injuries from the self-inflicted accident."
