Hurdler Robles gets disqualified as sprinters, vaulters put on show

(ATTN: UPDATES with dismissal of Cuba's appeal in 5th para)
By Yoo Jee-ho
DAEGU, Aug. 29 (Yonhap) -- There were no false starts in sprint events on Day 3 of the World Championships in Athletics Monday, a day after Usain Bolt got disqualified for jumping the gun in the 100 meters final. But there was another form of disqualification in a race that had initially ended on an exciting note.
In the much-hyped showdown in the men's 110節? hurdles, Dayron Robles of Cuba was disqualified about an hour after crossing the line first at 13.14 seconds. Jason Richardson of the U.S. was declared the winner, after finishing 0.02 seconds behind Robles and Liu Xiang of China took the second at 13.27. The bronze went to Andrew Turner of Britain.
The Cuban came in contact with Liu over the final two hurdles and was charged with obstruction on the track, according to officials at the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), following an appeal by Chinese officials.
Robles and Liu ran next to each other in lanes five and six, and actually embraced each other after the race. Liu was neck and neck with Robles and clipped the final hurdle, ending the race at 13.27.
Cuba's counterappeal was later dismissed by the jury of appeal at the IAAF.
This would have been the first world title for Robles, current record holder at 12.87 and the reigning Olympic champ.

Just before getting disqualified, Robles told reporters that physical contact is "normal in hurdles," dismissing a protest from Liu's camp.
Liu told reporters that Robles hit him twice and he lost his balance because of the contact over the 10th and the final hurdle. He also claimed he would have won the gold if not for the incident.
After the 100節? fizzled in the absence of Bolt and injured stars Asafa Powell and Tyson Gay, the 110節? hurdles was built up as the top sprint showdown. Robles, Liu and David Oliver, the season's three fastest and also the three fastest hurdlers in history, all cruised into the final. Up-and-coming Richardson blew past Oliver to crash the party for the so-called Big Three, and Robles' disqualification instead provided an anticlimactic ending.
The incident also overshadowed thrilling finishes and historic moments on the track and the field.
Carmelita Jeter of the U.S. won the women's 100節? at 10.90 seconds, edging Jamaica's Veronica Campbell-Brown (10.97) and Kelly-Ann Baptiste of Trinidad and Tobago (10.99).
Only 0.09 seconds separated the winner and the fourth-place Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, the defending world and Olympic champion who was nipped at the finish by Baptiste.
The event was advertised as the contest for bragging rights between the U.S. versus Jamaica, two sprint powerhouses, and five of the eight finalists were from the two nations.
Jamaica had taken the last two women's 100節? crowns and Jeter, bronze medalists in both occasions, ended the streak.
There were a couple of firsts on Monday. Koji Murofushi won Japan's first gold medal in Daegu, taking the men's hammer throw at 81.24節?. Krisztian Pars of Hungary and Primoz Kozmus of Slovenia were second and third.
Amantle Montsho won the women's 400m at 49.56, just 0.03 seconds faster than Allyson Felix, the three-time defending champion from the U.S. Montsho became the first athlete from Botswana to win a world title and also spoiled Felix's bid for an unprecedented 200節?-400節? double at a world championships.
Oscar Pistorius, amputee runner from South Africa, failed to make the final in men's 400節?. He was last in his heat and 22nd among 24 runners at 46.19 seconds, but still had he enjoyed a great learning experience.
"It has been a dream absolutely come true," the upbeat Pistorius said. "This is the championship I have worked for many years. It's been a massive blessing."
But he may yet have another race in Daegu in 4x400節? starting Thursday.
Defending 400節? world champ, LaShawn Merritt led the semifinals at 44.76.
The men's pole vault also went down to the wire, with Pawel Wojciechowski of Poland clearing 5.90節? in his second attempt to beat Lazaro Borges of Cuba, who also jumped 5.90節? but did so in his third try.
Both had three cracks at 5.95節?. After Wojciechowski missed his three chances, Borges had the final chance to determine the color of his medal. But he never even took off in his last run and handed the gold to the Polish.
It was another dismal day for South Koreans. Lee Seung-yun was dead last among 34 runners in the heat for men's 400節? hurdles at 52.98 seconds. In the women's 400節? hurdles, Son Mi-kyeong ranked 36th in the field of 38 with the time of 1:00.21.
No South Korean competed in the day's finals.
South Korea could become only the third host to be shut out of world championships medals, and could also come up short of its goal to place 10 athletes inside the top-10 in 10 events.
Through Monday, Kim Hyun-sub remains the only Korean to join the top 10, taking sixth in the men's 20??? race walk on Sunday.
