Leader's Advisor Stresses Iran's Influence on Islamic Awakening in Region

TEHRAN (FNA)- An advisor to the Iranian Supreme Leader described Iran as the origin and the main source of inspiration for the growing tide of Islamic awakening in the region.
Addressing the first gathering of the Islamic Awakening Conference here in Tehran on Monday evening, Supreme Leader's Advisor for International Affairs Ali Akbar Velayati said that the background of Islamic awakening in Islamic countries is as old as the history of colonialism.

"Ever since the foundations of colonialism were set almost two centuries ago we have been witnesses to the Muslim nations' uprisings against the entire agents of the colonialists," he stated.

"Just like the past, today, too, the wave of the Islamic awakening resonated throughout the Islamic world as an export of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and this is a matter reiterated by such people as Yasser Arafat, and even the founder of the Islamic Brotherhood, Hassan al-Banna."

Velayati pointed out that the Muslim Iranian nation countered the totalitarian tendencies of the colonialists ever since its birth, launching a wave of Islamic awakening, and stressed, "There are a number of secret elements that led to the victory of the Islamic Revolution, the most important one of which is the revolution's roots in Islam and the teachings of the Shiite school of thought."

Since the beginning of 2011, the Muslim world has witnessed popular uprisings and revolutions similar to what happened in Iran in 1979. Tunisia saw the overthrow of Zine El Abidine Ben Ali in a popular revolution in January, which was soon followed by a revolution which toppled Hosni Mubarak in Egypt in February.

Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Libya, Saudi Arabia and Yemen have since been the scene of protests against their totalitarian rulers, who have resorted to brutal crackdown on demonstrations to silence their critics.

In Libya, euphoric Libyan revolutionaries seized control of most of Tripoli on August 22 in a lightning advance, celebrating the victory in Green Square, the symbolic heart of Muammar Qaddafi's regime.
