Rim, new health minister, known for expertise in policy coordination

SEOUL, Aug. 30 (Yonhap) -- Rim Che-min, the new minister of Health and Welfare, is a seasoned economic bureaucrat who had long worked in the government's industrial policymaking fields before being appointed as minister of the Prime Minister's Office last year.
Rim, 53, a graduate of Seoul National University, entered government service in 1981 after passing the higher civil service examination. Since then, he has served in key posts at the Ministry of Knowledge Economy and its predecessor. His last post in the ministry was the first vice minister.
Rim is credited with playing an important role in the establishment of the Knowledge Economy Ministry under the Lee presidency, as well as in the reorganization of the ministry that led it to be in charge of the government's trade and IT policies. He has also contributed to devising the government's policies to foster middle-ranking enterprises, the software sector and new economic growth engines, among others.
Experts forecast Rim is expected to push for the privatization of medical corporations and the expanded sales of over-the-counter drugs outside drug stores.
