Gender quality minister nominee known as women's rights champion
SEOUL, Aug. 30 (Yonhap) -- Rep. Kim Kum-lae, the newly nominated gender quality minister, is known as a women's rights champion with decades of experience in the area.
A graduate of Ewha Womans University, Kim, 60, worked at a series of women's rights organizations since 1982 and served as the secretary general of the Korean National Council of Women, an umbrella organization of various women's rights groups.
Kim entered politics in the early 2000's as an official handling women's rights issues for the now-ruling Grand National Party. She served on the election campaign team for then GNP presidential candidate Lee Myung-bak in 2007 and became a lawmaker in 2008 on the GNP's proportional representation ticket.
She is a member of the parliamentary committee on women and family affairs as well as the health and welfare committee.
