S. Korean Park Chu-young joins Arsenal
SEOUL, Aug. 31 (Yonhap) -- South Korean footballer Park Chu-young has joined Arsenal, becoming the ninth Korean to play in the English Premier League.
Arsenal announced the signing on its Web site late Tuesday, Korean time. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. The 26-year-old had played the past three seasons for AS Monaco in the top French league.
"We're delighted to have signed (Park)," Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was quoted as saying. "He will add true quality to our attacking forces and will be a valuable addition to the squad."
Park, currently captain of the South Korean national team, has 17 goals in 53 international games. He netted 25 goals in 91 appearances for AS Monaco. He is training with the national team in South Korea this week ahead of the country's World Cup qualification match against Lebanon on Friday.
After AS Monaco was relegated to the second division following last season, Park had been in limbo for most of the offseason. He was close to signing with Lille OSC, the reigning French champion, earlier this month. But Arsenal swooped in to snatch the forward.
Park said he was "honored and happy" to be with Arsenal.
"It is a dream to be here and I am really proud to be an Arsenal player," he said. "Now I just want to show how good I am and prove myself. I will do my best, I will never give up, I will show heart, I will give everything and I hope (the fans) will support me."
Arsenal, based in North London, is one of the so-called "Big 4" in the Premier League, along with Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool. Arsenal has captured 13 Premier League titles, third most ever behind Manchester United and Liverpool.
Park was named the Asian Young Footballer of the Year by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) in 2005, and won the top rookie award in South Korea's K-League later that year with 18 goals in 30 games.
A veteran of the past two FIFA World Cups, Park recently replaced Park Ji-sung, midfielder with Manchester United, as the national team captain.
The club said Park will wear No. 9. Though his name is spelled "Chu-young," Park prefers "Ju-young" and his shirt will have "J.Y. Park" on the back.
