Sherman's confirmation hearing due next week
By Lee Chi-dong
WASHINGTON, Aug. 30 (Yonhap) -- The U.S. Senate plans to hold a confirmation hearing for Wendy Sherman, nominated to become the State Department's third highest-ranking official, next week, a related panel said Tuesday.
The hearing is scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday, shortly after Congress returns from a month-long summer recess, according to the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations. It will be presided over by Sen. John Kerry.
Sherman's hearing was originally slated for Aug. 3, but was postponed as Congress entered a break earlier than scheduled following an 11th-hour deal on the nation's debt ceiling.
A heated partisan debate is expected over whether Sherman is qualified to become under secretary for political affairs.
Republican members of the committee will likely focus attacks on Sherman's role in the Bill Clinton administration.
Sherman, who was adviser to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign, worked from 1997 to 2001 as then- Secretary of State Madeleine Albright's counselor and doubled as President Clinton's policy coordinator on North Korea.
Conservatives claim Sherman played a key role in the former administration's kid-gloves approach to the North, which has continued to bolster its nuclear and missile arsenals.
Meanwhile, it remains uncertain when Sung Kim, the nominee to become ambassador to South Korea, will be confirmed by the full Senate.
A date for a vote on his nomination has not yet been set amid reports that at least one unidentified Republican senator has placed a hold on a relevant process. The exact reason for the reported move remains unknown.
Kim had a confirmation hearing on July 21, and was confirmed by the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations a week later.
If confirmed by the entire Senate, the career diplomat will be the first Korean-born U.S. ambassador to Seoul.
