Rockets fired at S. Korean base in Afghanistan
SEOUL, Aug. 31 (Yonhap) -- South Korea said Wednesday that six rockets were fired at the base for the nation's reconstruction workers and troops in Afghanistan earlier this month, but no casualties were reported in the 13th attack so far this year.
Six rounds of rocket-propelled grenades were apparently fired toward the base in the city of Charikar in the northern Afghan province of Parwan around 1 a.m. on Aug. 15, an official at Seoul's foreign ministry said.
"There were no casualties as the rockets fell outside the base and no group has yet claimed responsibility," the official said on the condition of anonymity.
Some 340 Korean troops are stationed at the base to protect about 90 aid workers and police officers on a mission to reconstruct the war-torn province.
Including the Aug. 15 attack, the South Korean base in Charikar has come under attack 13 times so far this year, although no casualties or property damage have been reported.
Eight of the attacks took place after the May killing of terrorist leader Osama bin Laden by U.S. troops, raising suspicions about possible revenge attacks by Taliban rebels. South Korean officials have yet to determine the exact cause of the attacks or the forces behind them.
Parwan is considered one of the safest regions in Afghanistan, but concerns over security have risen as U.S.-led combat troops are scheduled to leave the war-torn nation by 2014 and hand over control to Afghan forces.
