Russian wins third straight race walk title in day's only event
By Yoo Jee-ho
DAEGU, Aug. 31 (Yonhap) -- Olga Kaniskina of Russia won the women's 20-kilometer race walk Wednesday for her third straight title at the World Championships in Athletics.
In the day's only event, Kaniskina crossed the line in one hour, 29 minutes and 42 seconds. China's Liu Hong was 18 seconds back in second, and another Russian, Anisya Kirdyapkina, was third at 1:30:13.
Kaniskina, the 2008 Olympic champ, had also won the race walk event at two earlier world championships. Since women's 20km race walk became an official event at the worlds in 1999, Russia has taken six of the seven titles.
Kaniskina moved into the lead early, and was soon joined by teammates Kirdyapkina and Vera Sokolova. Liu caught up with the leading group at the halfway point. Kaniskina then made her move to surge ahead with 6km left for the win.
Sokolova, the world record holder at 1:25:08, fell well behind the leaders and ended in 11th place.
Jeon Yong-eun, the lone South Korean in the field, established her best time of the season at 1:35:52, but ended in 26th.
No other event is scheduled for the rest of Wednesday. The championships will be back in full swing Thursday with finals in six disciplines.
