Two blasts in Grozny on Tue killed 7 and wounded 18 (adds).
GROZNY, August 31 (Itar-Tass) - According to the latest data, the
blasts that occurred in Grozny on Tuesday night killed five policemen, one
member of Emergency Ministry personnel, and one civilian. Eighteen people
-- policemen and civilians -- were wounded, said a source in Chechnya's
law enforcement agencies.
The first blast occurred on Tuesday night, at about 21:45 on Bogdan
Khmelnitsky Street in Leninsky District. The street leads to Grozny
airport. "A militant set off the bomb when police were trying to apprehend
him," the source said.
About one hour later, a second bomb blast was set off in the crowd in
the same place by a suicide bomber, a spokesman for the Chechen Interior
Ministry said. The site of the incidents was cordoned off by police.
Investigating groups and operatives have been at work there.
Head of the Republic Ramzan Kadyrov has already held a special
conference, during which he ordered taking exhaustive measures to arrange
a funeral of those killed and give welfare assistance to the families of
the victims, and provide those wounded with a high-class medical treatment.
Kadyrov emphasized in a talk to journalists, "Those who sent the
bandits and those who set off the bomb lack anything sacred either in
religion or nationality". He said the bombing incident is indicative of
the need to wage tough struggle against bandits.
Kadyrov pointed out that police personnel, sacrificing their lives,
had frustrated the bandits' plans that could have inflicted heavy
casualties among the population.
