Taiwan's AUO gets approval from China to build LCD plant
By Kim Young-gyo
HONG KONG, Aug. 31 (Yonhap) -- China has approved a plan by Taiwanese flat screen manufacturer AU Optronics Corp. (AUO) to build a liquid crystal display (LCD) panel plant in the country, industry sources said Wednesday, a move likely to intensify competition between South Korean and Taiwanese panel makers.
The sources said AUO will invest some US$3.25 billion in its Chinese partner Kunshan Longfei Longfei Optical Electronics for setting up an 8.5-generation panel production line in the city of Kunshan. AUO plans to start operation of the plant in 2013.
The approval will help the Taiwanese LCD maker tap growing demand for large-size flat panels used for televisions and computers.
South Korean LCD makers Samsung Electronics Co. and LG Display Co. in December obtained approval from the Chinese government to build LCD factories there.
Samsung Electronics, the sector leader, began construction of a 7.5-generation LCD plant in Suzhou earlier in May this year.
LG Display, the world's second-largest maker of LCD panels, will likely break ground soon on a new plant in the southern city of Guangzhou, industry sources here said.
The company pushed back an initial plan to start construction of its eighth-generation LCD plant in China during the first half of this year, as panel prices continued to trend downward.
