Gen. Sharp to retire this week after service in Korea

By Lee Chi-dong
WASHINGTON, Aug. 31 (Yonhap) -- A former leader of U.S. troops in South Korea, Gen. Walter Sharp, will hang up his uniform later this week, wrapping up 37 years of military life, and he is looking for a civilian job, Army officials said Wednesday.
Sharp served as the head of 28,000 American troops on the peninsula when it suffered one of the biggest military crises since the 1950-53 Korean War. He is credited with having led close and effective consultations with the South's military when it was attacked twice by North Korea last year.
He was replaced by Gen. James D. Thurman in July after a three-year stint. Sharp's father was a Korean War veteran.
"The retirement ceremony for Gen. Sharp will be held at 10 a.m. at Fort Myer on Thursday," a U.S. Army official said.
He added, however, the press won't be invited to the event at the Army post near Washington.
Sharp is still doing job interviews for civilian employment, the official added, amid rumors that he may work at a security think tank.
Sharp, a West Point graduate, has a master of science degree in operations research and system analysis from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
Meanwhile, Gen. David Petraeus, formerly commander of multinational forces in Iraq and Afghanistan, bade farewell to the military Wednesday before being sworn in as CIA chief next week.
