Australia sponsors Lao sign language book publishing

Vientiane, aug 31. (KPL)- Students and teachers from the Lao Deaf School, together with officials from the Lao Disabled People’s Association (LDPA) joined the Australian Ambassador, Lynda Worthaisong at a handover ceremony for the first designed Lao sign language booklet on Tuesday 30 August.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, the Australian Ambassador, Lynda Worthaisong, said “the Australian Government is very proud to have contributed US$ 12,575 to the printing of the first designed Lao sign language booklet. The printing of these booklets was supported under a grant by the Australian Government’s Direct Aid Program (DAP). The successful printing of the booklet means that all deaf people, their families, teachers and students will be able to have better communication, improving the standard of living in their communities”.
Mrs Worthaisong also said that “Australian Government will continue its support for Lao Government to achieve its long term social and economic development goals. I strongly support the Deaf Unit’s slogan that “Deaf must be able to exercise their linguistic human rights”.
The Direct Aid Program (DAP) is a small-scale grants program managed by the Australian Embassy in Vientiane. The purpose is to support projects that address basic humanitarian hardship and reduce poverty by directly assisting poor and disadvantaged groups in the areas of community health, schools and education, small-scale infrastructure, rural development and the environment.
