S. Korea's foreign minister heads to Paris conference on Libya
SEOUL, Sept. 1 (Yonhap) -- South Korean Foreign Minister Kim Sung-hwan left for France to attend a high-level meeting of an international coalition that supports Libya's reconstruction and political transition, officials said Thursday.
Top leaders or senior diplomats from about 50 nations and international organizations, including U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, were expected to take part in the first "Friends of Libya" conference on Thursday in Paris.
Libya's interim council, the National Transitional Council (NTC), will present its initiatives for political transition and national reconstruction at the meeting, said Seoul's Foreign Ministry spokesman Cho Byung-jae.
"The participants will then discuss ways for the international community to extend political and financial support to the country, including unfreezing its overseas assets," Cho said.
"This conference is the first high-level international meeting to discuss the direction of Libya's reconstruction at a time when the unrest in the country is reaching its final stage," the spokesman said.
On the sidelines of the Paris conference, Kim will also meet with the NTC delegates and discuss ways to promote Korea-Libya relations, Cho said.
South Korea has officially recognized Libya's NTC as the North African nation's legitimate government and pledged to provide humanitarian assistance to the Libyan people.
