S. Korean builder sentiment falls in August

SEOUL, Sept. 1 (Yonhap) -- Business sentiment among South Korean builders fell slightly last month amid U.S. financial turmoil and seasonal sluggish demand, a report said Thursday.
The monthly construction business sentiment index for August stood at 68.9 last month, compared with 71.1 the previous month, according to the report by the Construction and Economy Search Institute of Korea (CERIK).
The August reading marks a decline for the second straight month, the report said. A reading below 100 means that pessimists outnumber optimists.
"The business sentiment was affected by economic uncertainties caused by the financial crisis, stemming from the U.S. debt problems, and bad weather," the CERIK report said.
The report, however, forecast that the sentiment index for September will rebound on stronger demand.
"The index usually rises in September thanks to seasonal factors. But the gain will be limited as the U.S. and European fiscal crises keep affecting business conditions at home and abroad," the report said.
The index has hovered around 70 this year as South Korea's property market has been stuck in a prolonged slump since the onset of the 2008 financial crisis.
