Kia Motors sales up 27 pct in August
SEOUL, Sept. 1 (Yonhap) -- Kia Motors Corp., South Korea's second-largest automaker, said Thursday that its sales in August rose 27.0 percent from a year earlier as a surge in overseas sales offset decreased domestic demand.
The company sold 191,232 vehicles overall last month, compared with 150,526 vehicles a year earlier. Domestic sales decreased 5.2 percent on-year to 36,611 units last month, but exports shot up 38.2 percent to 154,621 units.
Weak domestic sales were in part caused by fewer operating days at local plants as union workers took time off to engage in annual wage negotiations and to vote on the results of the agreement reached with management.
The carmaker said monthly sales were fueled by solid demand for its Morning compact car, the K5 mid-size sedan and Sportage R compact sport utility vehicle.
In the first eight months of the year, Kia posted sales exceeding 1.64 million units with gains being reported for both the local and overseas markets.
Domestic sales rose 4.4 percent on-year to 325,662 units in the first eight months, with overseas figures surpassing 1.31 million units or a gain of 30.4 percent from the year before.
