GM Korea sales up 12.9 pct in Aug.

SEOUL, Sept. 1 (Yonhap) -- GM Korea Co., the South Korean unit of U.S. automaker General Motors Co., said Thursday that its sales in August rose 12.9 percent from a year earlier, fueled by solid demand.
GM Korea sold 54,444 vehicles last month, compared with 48,211 units a year earlier, the company said in a statement. The figure, however, represents a 18.4 percent drop from 66,681 units in July.
Domestic sales surged 25 percent on-year to 11,408 units last month, with exports gaining 10.1 percent to 43,036 units.
The carmaker said sales of its Chevrolet brand cars, such as the Spark small-sized car, Orlando multi-purpose vehicle and Cruze compact, have picked up pace thanks mainly to higher consumer recognition in the local market.
In the first eight months of the year, sales rose 9.7 percent on-year to 534,662 units. Domestic sales rose 21.0 percent to 93,483 units with exports gaining 7.6 percent to 441,179 vehicles, the company said.
