7 people to receive honor for roles in retrieving ancient Korean books

PARIS/SEOUL, Sept. 1 (Yonhap) -- Seven people, including a Korean-French historian and a former French culture minister, will receive a South Korean government honor this week in recognition of their contributions to getting a collection of rooted ancient Korean books back from France, Seoul's foreign ministry said Thursday.
Park Byeong-seon, the historian who paved the way for the return of the royal books by discovering the books at the French National Library, will receive the second-grade national medal called "Moran," the ministry said.
France's ex-culture minister Jacques Lang and Vincent Berger, president of Paris Diderot University, will receive "Gwanghwa" and "Heung-in" medals, the first and second-grade orders of diplomatic service merit, for their active support in the campaign to return the books, it said.
An awarding ceremony is scheduled to be held at the South Korean Embassy in France on Friday.
France returned the "Oegyujanggak" books, which detail the protocols of royal ceremonies and rites of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), through a renewable lease earlier this year.
The books were looted by French troops in 1866 when they invaded Ganghwa Island in retaliation for Koreans' persecution of French Catholic missionaries.
