SEOUL, Sept. 2 (Yonhap) -- South Korean stocks opened lower on Friday, but gained ground as investors snapped up carmaker and machinery shares, analysts said.

U.S. markets closed lower on Thursday as mixed signals from economic data raised uncertainty. The Dow Jones industrial average declined 1 percent and the tech-laden Nasdaq Composite Index fell 1.3 percent.
The local currency was trading at 1,062.15 won to the U.S. dollar as of 9:15 a.m., down 0.85 won from Thursday's close.
