KELAB PUTERA 1MALAYSIA WANTS TO SET UP CAMP IN SOMALIA
From Khairulanuar Mohd Yahaya
MOGADISHU, Sept 2 (Bernama) -- Putera 1Malaysia Club has proposed to sponsor
a camp in Somalia to shelter drought and famine victims.
Its president Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim said the move was more practical
compared to sending aid material to the camps in view of the security risks.
"At the same time, we would wait for further instructions from the prime
minister on whether we can set it up," he said.
He was leading a humanitarian mission comprising 55 club members including
medical officers. They distributed essentials at Badbado, the largest temporary
settlement and also conducted medical examinations.
According to Abdul Azeez, other countries such as Turkey, Iran and Sudan
have already set up camps as a long-term measure to support the victims.
The team, assisted by 26 Royal Malaysian Air Force personnel, arrived in a
C-130 airplane on Monday bringing along 250 tonnes of food and medicine to cater
for 45,000 families in Somalia.
They also celebrated the National Day on Wednesday in a brief ceremony by
singing the national anthem.
