World powers to unfreeze Gaddafi's assets for new Libya

PARIS, September 2 (Itar-Tass) -- World leaders agreed at an
international meeting on Libya on Thursday to unfreeze the assets of
ousted Muammar Gaddafi and thus help the interim rulers rebuild the
country.
Libya's Transitional National Council (TNC) thanked the West for
support and promised to promote reconciliation and national dialogue.
"We have committed to unblock funds from the Libya of the past to
finance the development of the Libya of the future," French President
Nicolas Sarkozy told a news conference. He estimated the amount at $15
billion.
TNC Chairman Mustafa Abdel Jalil told delegations from about 60
countries and international bodies that Libya would not let them down.
"The world staked on the Libyans and the Libyans showed their courage and
made their dream come true," he said.
Russian presidential envoy for Africa Mikhail Margelov participated in
the meeting and said the UN Security Council has to determine the
international role in all future processes in Libya.
He echoed Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov who said before the Paris
meeting that "Russia has always called for the United Nations to decide
all issues related to foreign support to the Libyans in overcoming the
crisis."
