Russia, Tajikistan presidents sign border cooperation agreement

DUSHANBE, September 2 (Itar-Tass) -- The presidents of Russia and
Tajikistan signed an agreement on border cooperation here on Friday. The
signing ceremony of this and other documents was held after the
negotiations between the delegations of the two countries in Dushanbe.
Dmitry Medvedev and Emomali Rakhmon inked the border cooperation
agreement and issued a joint statement. The Russian Federal Security
Service and the Tajik National Security State Committee signed the
protocols on border cooperation in the presence of the presidents.
Russian Energy Minister Sergei Shmatko and Tajik Deputy Prime Minister
Murodali Alimardon signed an intergovernmental program for economic
cooperation in 2011-2014.
"The negotiations passed in the atmosphere of friendship and full
mutual understanding generally characteristic for bilateral relations and
were businesslike and trust-based," the Tajik president told a press
conference. "We discussed current interstate relations and the prospects
for their development and exchanged views on several topical regional and
international issues," Rakhmon said.
The presidents expressed "mutual intentions for closer political
contacts, their broader agenda, and mutual interests in the joint
implementation of concrete economically beneficial projects, including
those in the hydropower industry, as the guidelines of cooperation," the
Tajik president said.
Proceeding from the common responsibility for stability and security
in Central Asia, the countries confirmed their firm intentions to develop
military and military-technical cooperation.
Rakhmon also noted that the bilateral meeting also focused on cultural
and humanitarian cooperation.
