New bullet resistant vests for NSW police

Frontline police in NSW are set to get new and improved bullet resistant vests following next week's state budget, Premier Barry O'Farrell says.
The 2,500 vests, which will cost $3.8 million, use improved technology and will provide better protection for first response police officers, Mr O'Farrell said.
"Our police face dangers on a daily basis," the premier told reporters in Sydney on Saturday.
"These vests play a vital role in the safety and confidence of frontlinepolice when they are engaged in volatile and dangerous situations."
Deputy Police Commissioner Nick Kaldas said the funding, which will be included in Tuesday's budget, was welcome but "a little bit overdue".
"The technology is evolving rapidly ... (and) we are very happy to get the vests and dish them out to police out on the street," he said.
Mr Kaldas hoped the vests, which are made with soft body armour and heavier plates, would reach police officers in the field before the end of the year.
