NRA adopts National Standard for UXO in Laos

(KPL) The National Regulatory Authority adopted National Standards for control and regulation of the Unexploded Ordnance in Laos.
The standards were made during the meeting held on 18 September, attended by Head of International Organization Mr Saleuamsay Kommasith, Director of National Regulatory Authority Dr Maligna Saignavong and other concerned officials.
The lack of standards in previous years has caused donor concern and hindered the work of the NRA, said Dr Maligna.
The standards were the establishment of operation area for all implementing organizations including the activity of UXO’s clearance, community awareness of UXO and the assistance for victims who suffered from UXO.
Fourteen of Laos’ provinces are contaminated with UXO as a result of American bombardment during the Indochina war.
The national strategy for reducing the number of UXO victims began in 2003 and is scheduled for completion in 2013.
The draft of National Standards was adopted by NRA as the basic in the implementation for other UXO agencies and as the tools for NRA’s office.This aims to manage and exam the quality for the programs are safety and effective in the future.
According to an NRA report, from January to May of this year, more than 2,624 hectares of land had been cleared. During this period, in excess of 40,300 ordnance items were destroyed.
