Coast Guard to buy 30-seat chopper for emergency transport
INCHEON, Sept. 4 (Yonhap) -- The Coast Guard is planning to introduce a large-sized helicopter that can be used to evacuate residents from western sea border islands in the event of an emergency, officials said Sunday.
They said the Coast Guard will spend 51 billion won (US$48 million) by 2014 to buy a transport helicopter that can seat 30 passengers.
The new chopper will carry out rescue and search missions in case of large-scale maritime accidents and participate in the observation of North Korean ships under the government's efforts to stem the spread of weapons of mass destruction, they noted.
In the event North Korea carries out an additional attack on a western sea border island, the new helicopter will be used to evacuate residents to safer mainland areas, they added.
The Coast Guard aims to increase the number of its helicopters from the current 20 to 24. The largest chopper currently owned by the Coast Guard can seat up to 10 passengers.
