Iranian, Tajikistani Presidents to have talks in Dushanbe

DUSHANBE, September 4 (Itar-Tass) - Iran's President Mahmoud
Ahmadinejad begins a two-day official visit to Tajikistan Sunday, the
Tajikistani presidential press service said.
Ahmadinejad and his Tajik opposite number, Emomali Rakhmon are
expected to hold talks in the afternoon. According to the press release,
their dicussion will mostly focus on "a block of economic issues",
especially the ones related to the investment projects, in which Iran
takes part.
The Iranians invest predominantlyower facilities and in transport and
road construction.
"The sides will scrutinize Iran's initiative on constructing the Aini
hydropower plant on the River Zerafshan that marks off the border with
Uzbekistan," the press service said. The proposed plant is expected to
have an output capacity for 150 megawatt of electricity a year.
"It is not ruled out that the two Presidents will sign an
inter-governmental agreement," the press release said.
Officials here also expect that the power-generating units of the
Sangtuda-2 plant, which Tajikistan is building with Iran's assistance on
the River Vakhsh. The plant will have an output capacity for 220 megawatt
of electric power.
Earlier reports said the commissioning of the latter plant was
postponed for two months as a minimum.
Still the Tajikistani and Iranian Presidents will hopefully press the
push-button at the plant September 5.
Tajikistan, a country experiencing chronic shortages of electricity
during the fall and especially during the winter months of the year
attaches real significance to this particular power plant. The nation's
current resource of electric power consists of the electricity generated
at local plants plus the electricity coming the Sangtuda-1 plant, the
construction of which was financed by Russia, but it is far from enough to
cover the actual demand for electric power.
Iran occupies the fifth position from the top in the table of
Tajikistan's largest foreign trade partners. The four upper positions
there are occupied by Russia, China, Turkey, and Kazakhstan.
There is an obvious tendency towards greater cooperation between
Teheran and Dushanbe. Upon the results of January-July, bilateral trade
grew 16.3% and reached $ 119.3 million.
The imports of Iranian commodities make up the bulk of it -- 95.8%.
