S. Korea's air traffic volume world's 6th largest in 2010
SEOUL, Sept. 5 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's air transportation volume reached the world's sixth largest last year mainly on increasing demand for air cargo services, the government said Monday.
The country's air traffic volume jumped 31 percent from a year ago to some 21.15 billion ton-kilometer, a measurement unit that shows the amount of payload moved 1 kilometer.
It is the first time the country's air traffic volume reached the world's sixth largest since 2000, according to the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs. The findings were based on an annual report of the International Civil Aviation Organization.
The volume of international passenger and cargo traffic reached over 20.7 billion ton-kilometer, the world's fifth largest, with cargo traffic soaring 48 percent on-year to the world's third largest volume.
International passenger services remained the world's ninth largest for the seventh consecutive year while overall passenger traffic, including domestic services, jumped 10 percent from a year earlier from the world's 15th largest to 13th largest in volume, it said.
The number of people using international passenger services by South Korean airliners increased from 15.95 million in the first half of 2009 to 19.15 million in the first half of last year and again to 19.95 million this year, according to the ministry.
