LG Electronics to consolidate mobile business R&D in China
HONG KONG, Sept. 6 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's second-largest electronics maker LG Electronics Inc. will consolidate its research and development (R&D) functions in China for its mobile business in a bid to enhance its localization efforts there, company officials said Tuesday.
LG's Chinese subsidiary will combine its mobile phone R&D department in Beijing with its production facilities in the eastern province of Shandong into a single organization, they said.
The move is aimed at improving efficiency and work quality, the officials said, adding that the new R&D unit will be based in the plant in Yantai, a city in Shandong province.
The South Korean electronics manufacturer is seeking to strengthen its localization strategies in its new R&D organization, in order to meet demand of Chinese customers.
The company, which entered China about 20 years ago, has so far set up a total of 13 production bases in the northeastern cities, including Qingdao, Yantai and the southern city of Huizhou.
The world's third-largest maker of mobile handsets by shipment saw its second-quarter earnings tumble 32.9 percent from a year ago as its handset business lost money for the first time in four years.
Koo Bon-joon, chief executive officer of the electronics giant, said earlier that the worst has passed for LG Electronics, as its earnings hit bottom in the second quarter and will likely improve down the road.
