Sales of imported vehicles rise 4.1 pct in Aug.

SEOUL, Sept. 6 (Yonhap) -- Sales of imported vehicles in South Korea rose 4.1 percent in August from a year earlier, helped by new car models and importers' aggressive marketing, a trade association said Tuesday.
A total of 9,116 imported vehicles were sold here last month, compared with 8,758 units sold a year earlier, according to the Korea Automobile Importers and Distributors Association (KAIDA). Sales in August also rose 2.9 percent from the previous month, the association said.
In the first eight months of the year, a total of 69,639 imported cars were sold in South Korea, up 19.3 percent from a year earlier, it added.
KAIDA earlier forecast that sales of new imported vehicles here would top 100,000 units in 2011 for the first time.
According to the association, German luxury automaker BMW maintained its best-selling brand status for the seventh consecutive month since February with 2,169 units sold here last month.
This was followed by Mercedes Benz with 1,802 units and Audi with 869 units sold in South Korea.
By size, vehicles with a 2.0-liter or smaller engine were most popular, taking up 39.1 percent of the market share in August. This was followed by a 35.1 percent market share for cars with engine capacities more than 2.0 liters but below 3.0 liters.
By origin, European vehicles dominated the local market with a combined 72.7 percent share of the market in August, followed by Japanese manufacturers with 19.9 percent and U.S. automakers with 7.5 percent, KAIDA said.
