Tajikistan Fond of Bolstering Ties, Cooperation with Iran
TEHRAN (FNA)- Tajikistan's President Emomali Rahmon underlined his country's enthusiasm for expanding ties with Iran.
Speaking in a joint press conference with his Iranian counterpart Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the Tajik president stressed that Dushanbe is keen on bolstering relations and conducting joint projects with Iran.
He also said promoting ties would help strengthen stability in the region.
Rahmon further thanked Iran for building Sangtude-2 dam and power plant, saying that this has been the best gift presented by the Iranian engineers to the Tajik people.
During a ceremony in Khatlon Province in Tajikistan on Monday, which was attended by Ahmadinejad and Rahmon, the first turbine of the 220-megawatt hydroelectric power plant, constructed by Iranian engineers, came on stream.
Ahmadinejad has formally been invited by his Tajik counterpart to attend the ceremonies held in the country to mark Tajikistan's independence from the former Soviet Union, but inauguration of Sangtude-2 mega project was a main agenda of his visit to the Central Asian state.
The construction project of the dam on Vakhsh river as well as its 220-megawatt power plant called Sangtuda-2 started by an Iranian company in early 2006.
Management of the dam which will produce one billion kw/h electricity once fully implemented will go to Tajikistan after 12 years of implementation by Iran.
For the total project $256 million was invested of which 70 percent ($180 million) was paid by Iran, 15.6 percent ($40 million) by Tajikistan, and the rest by the Iranian Sange'ab company.
Tajik officials and people are happy to see that the project is accomplished even 6 months ahead of the declared timetable.
Ahmadinejad is also due to finalize a contract on the construction of Aini power plant near Zarafshan river during his visit to the Central Asian state.
The Iranian President will also ink a contract over the construction of a cement plant in Tajikistan.
Iran and Tajikistan have recently accelerated expansion of their ties and cooperation and observers believe that the good achievements gained in area of their mutual cooperation should be deemed as a result of the efforts made by the two countries' officials.
