Iran, Tajikistan Ink Agreement on Construction of More Power Plants

TEHRAN (FNA)- Senior Iranian and Tajik officials signed an agreement on the construction of more power plants in the Central Asian state after Iranian engineers accomplished the first phase of Sangtude-2 hydroelectric power plant even 6 months ahead of the timetable.
The Iranian and Tajik energy ministers signed a protocol of intent on the construction of Aini hydroelectric power plant during a two-day visit to Tajikistan by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

The two countries first signed a protocol of intent to build the Aini plant near Zarafshan river in January. The plant would have an approximate capacity of 130 megawatts.

Ahmadinejad and his Tajik counterpart Emomali Rahmon on Monday inaugurated the first of the two generating units at the Sangtuda-2 hydroelectric power plant in Tajikistan.

The plant, with a capacity of 220 megawatts, cost about $220 million to build, $180 million of which was borne by Iran. Iran is to receive the entire revenue for sales of its electricity for 12 years, after which Tajikistan would takeover full ownership of the plant.

Also during his trip to Tajikistan, the Iranian President is due to ink a contract over the construction of a cement plant in the Central Asian country.
