Police Smash 7 Major Drug Rings in Southwestern City
TEHRAN (FNA)- Senior Iranian Law Enforcement officials announced on Tuesday that police have clamped down on seven major drug rings in the country's Southwestern port city of Khorramshahr during the last few months.
"As a result of the measures taken by the police, seven drug rings have been disbanded in the city of Khorramshahr during the first four months of the current (Iranian) year (started on March 21)," Khorramshahr's Police Chief Hossein Azizi told FNA on Tuesday.
The commander added that police forces have carried out 6 comprehensive operations in the town since the beginning of the current year as part of their measures against drug trafficking in the region.
Earlier, commander of the anti-narcotics squad of Iran's Law Enforcement Police General Hamid Reza Hossein-Abadi said that police forces have clamped down on 738 major drug rings throughout the country during the first four months of the current Iranian year.
The commander added that the Iranian anti-drug police squads have discovered and seized 151 tons of different types of narcotics during the said period.
Iran lies on a major drug route between Afghanistan and Europe, as well as the Persian Gulf states. Since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, the Iranian police have lost more than 3700 of their personnel in the country's combat against narcotics.
Iran spends billions of dollars and has lost thousands of its police troops in the war against traffickers. Owing to its rigid efforts, Iran makes 89 percent of the world's total opium seizures and has turned into the leading country in drug campaign.
