Iranian Deputy FM Deplores Insult to Religious Leaders in Bahrain

TEHRAN (FNA)- A senior Iranian Foreign Ministry official on Wednesday condemned the Manama regime's insult and aggressions against Bahrain's religious leaders, cautioning that the wrong approach would further complicate the situation in the tiny Persian Gulf island.
"What has happened today for the religious leaders and scholars in Bahrain will complicate the situation on the ground," Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir Abdollahian told FNA, stressing that Manama's insulting attitude would certainly hurt Muslim sentiments across the globe and the region.

The Iranian diplomat further blamed deployment of foreign forces in Bahrain for such violent approaches in the country, saying, "Such moves take place following the continued presence and illegal acts of the foreign forces stationed in the country (Bahrain)," the Iranian diplomat stated.

Bahrain's security court in June sentenced eight prominent opposition figures to life imprisonment while 13 others received shorter prison terms. Seven activists were sentenced in absentia.

Among the eight defendants who received life sentences are Bahrain's Shiite leaders Hassan Mushaima and Abdul Jalil al-Singace.

Abdollahian further called on the Bahraini officials to stop such insulting acts.

Abdollahian said that the Islamic Republic of Iran sees effective dialogue and government's carful attention to people demands as the best solution to the crisis in Bahrain.

Bahrainis have been waging protest rallies since mid-February, demanding an end to the Al Khalifa dynasty, which has ruled the country for over 40 years.

Violence against the defenseless people escalated after a Saudi-led conglomerate of police, security and military forces from the Persian Gulf Cooperation Council (PGCC) member states were dispatched to the tiny kingdom on March 13 to help Manama crack down on peaceful protestors.

Scores of people have been killed and hundreds more arrested in the brutal crackdown on peaceful protesters in Bahrain, home to a huge American military installation for the US Navy's Fifth Fleet in the Persian Gulf.
