Cooperation allows RF, China inform each other about wildfires.
BEIJING, September 7 (Itar-Tass) - The present mechanism of
cooperation in protection of forests from wildfires allows Russia and
China to inform each other efficiently about emergency situations, Deputy
Head of Russia's Federal Forestry Agency Alexander Panfilov said on
Wednesday at the APEC's first meeting of forestry ministers.
"Speaking about cooperation in forestry between Russia and China, we
have an agreement of 1995 on the subject," he said.
There is one new direction of cooperation with China in development of
forests, he said.
"China has always experienced deficit in forests, and the present
development of China's wood industry is connected to a big extent to
receiving wood from the territories of Siberia and Russia's Far East,"
Panfilov continued. "Russia develops relations with China in exchange of
experience and in scientific and technical cooperation."
Cooperation with China has many options, which are not used, he said.
They refer to implementation of new technologies in extinguishing
wildfires.
Russia hopes for more active cooperation with China in fighting
illegal production of wood. As yet, there is no much progress there, he
added.
China is APEC's major consumer of Russia's wood industry complex.
Other main consumers are Japan and the Republic of Korea. Russia exports
over 80 percent of the Far East's processed wood and over 40 percent of
Siberia's products.
