Lee calls for growth of SMEs through transparent management

SEOUL, Sept. 8 (Yonhap) -- President Lee Myung-bak said Thursday that small- and medium-sized firms are the backbone of South Korea's economy and their development through transparent management can ensure the sustainable growth of the overall economy.
"If we have many small- and medium-sized enterprises that are globally recognized, then our economy becomes strong. A handful of companies leading the economy" is not desirable in the long term, Lee said in a meeting with CEOs of dozens of SMEs.
"Therefore, if we have many strong SMEs that underpin the economy, we can achieve strong, sustainable economic growth. In this sense, I have high expectations for SMEs," he said.
The meeting was set up to promote Lee's "ecosystemic development" drive that calls for large businesses to play greater roles in narrowing social inequalities.
"We have been making a lot of demands for conglomerates these days with regard to ecosystemic development, but SMEs have a lot of problems as well," he said. "Some of them do business like households and some others have opaque accounting. SMEs should also be run professionally through transparent management."
