Medvedev, Gul to discuss Mdeast, NPP, safe vacationing for Russians
MOSCOW, September 8 (Itar-Tass) -- President Dmitry Medvedev will meet with Turkish President Abdullah Gul on Thursday, September 8.
Gul will be the top guest at the World Political Forum in Yaroslavl.
The two leaders will discuss "the Libyan crisis, the situation around Syria, Euro-Atlantic security, prospects for the Middle East settlement, and the Iranian nuclear programme", the presidential press service told Itar-Tass.
They will also discuss bilateral cooperation, including safe and
comfortable vacationing for Russian tourists at Turkish resorts.
More than 3 million Russians visited Turkey in 2010 (an increase of 24 percent form 2009). The current season is projected to beat the record despite various incidents that involve Russian tourists.
"For the purpose of ensuring sanitary and epidemiological welfare of Russian citizens in Turkey, the Federal Service for Supervision of
Consumer Protection and Welfare and the Russian Foreign Ministry have
drafted a memorandum of cooperation with the Turkish Ministry of Health, which is now being coordinated with the Turkish side," the press service said.
Medvedev and Gul plan to pay special attention to trade and economic ties between the two countries. Russia is one of the main foreign trade partners for Turkey, and Turkey is one among the leading countries in terms of bilateral trade with Russia.
Bilateral trade turnover in 2010 neared the pre-crisis level and
exceeded 25 billion U.S. dollars. "This year's indicators - an increase of 25 percent ion the first six months f this year from same period of last year - show that the positive trends continues," the Kremlin said.
It also noted broader energy cooperation between Russia and Turkey. Russian natural gas supplies to Turkey in 2010 amounted to 18 billion cubic metres (14.5 billion cubic metres in the first seven months of 2011), including about 7.5 billion cubic metres delivered by the Blue Stream pipeline.
"Now the agenda includes joint implementation of the South Stream
designed to strengthen energy security in the whole of Europe. Russian
companies have started the second stage of work on a feasibility study
from May 15 for the construction of the marine section of the pipeline in Turkey's exclusive economic zone in the Black Sea in accordance with the permission issued by the Turkish side," the Kremlin press service said.
"Russia's biggest project in Turkey -- the construction of a nearly 20
billion U.S. dollar nuclear power plant at Akkuyu - has already entered the implementation stage. Immediate plans includes obtaining necessary permits and licenses for the commencement of construction," it said.
A successful example of non-energy cooperation between the two
countries is the construction of a smelter plant in Iskenderun by
Magnitogorsk Metallurgical Plant and the Turkish company Atakas. The
project is estimated at nearly 1.7 billion U.S. dollars.
Gul will be visiting Russia for the second time. He made his first
trip to Russia in February 2009 when he came on a state visit.
