China lags behind S. Korea, Japan in OLED

HONG KONG, Sept. 8 (Yonhap) -- China lags behind South Korea and Japan in production of organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays as manufacturers in the two countries are expanding their investment in the burgeoning products, a Chinese expert said Thursday.
OLEDs are seen to replace existing liquid crystal displays (LCDs) largely due to their energy efficiency. An OLED can work without a backlight, allowing for thinner and lighter screens than LCDs.
While the Chinese display makers, such as BOE Co. and Hua Xing Optoelectronic Co., have developed technologies to build 8.5-generation production lines, they still have a huge generation gap in their technologies, compared to their South Korean and Japanese counterparts, said the Institute of Semiconductors under the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
"The Chinese government needs to boost the promising display industry with aggressive support," said Wang Xiaoliang, a researcher at the institute.
In June, an alliance of China's OLED industry initiated by 19 enterprises, including BOE, was launched, in an aim to effectively integrate industrial resources and enhance the cooperation of the OLED industry.
According to Chinese consulting firm CCID, Chinese companies shipped 1.35 million OLED displays in 2010, up 38.2 percent from the previous year.
The Chinese government has been supporting the OLED industry by introducing special funds from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and tax policies on new display manufacturers imported materials.
However, as of now, the Chinese makers still need to import key equipment from South Korea, Japan and Europe to manufacture OLEDs.
