China's trade surplus shrinks in Aug.
By Kim Young-gyo
HONG KONG (Yonhap) - China's trade surplus shrank sharply in August from a month earlier as imports grew faster than exports, the Chinese customs office said Sunday.
According to the General Administration of Customs, the country's trade surplus stood at US$17.8 billion last month, down from a surplus of $31.5 billion tallied in July.
Exports rose 24.5 percent from a year ago to a record monthly high of $173.3 billion, and imports also grew to a new record high of $155.6 billion, up 30.2 percent from a year earlier.
Both exports and imports expanded at a faster pace for the second month in a row. In July, exports grew 20.4 percent from a year ago and imports gained 22.9 percent.
