Iran to Export Gas to Iraq
TEHRAN (FNA)- Caretaker of the National Iranian Gas Export Company Hossein Bidarmaqz announced that the country is due to ink a deal with Iraq to export natural gas to the country.
Bidarmaqz said on Sunday that according to the initial contract Iran's gas will be transited through Ilam border to feed three Iraqi power plants but the final agreement will be inked within two months, the official website of Iran's Oil Ministry Shana reported.
The official stated that based on the agreement with the Iraqi energy ministry, the Islamic Republic of Iran would export 25 million cubic meters of natural gas per day to Iraq in the next year and a half.
Bidarmaqz went on to say that the Iraqi Ministry of Electricity has signed a contract with an Iranian company for the construction of the required gas pipeline in its territory.
Earlier in July, Tehran had inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Baghdad and Damascus to export Iran's natural gas from the country's giant South Pars gas field to Iraq and Syria as well as Lebanon and the Mediterranean region.
"The deal which is worth $10bln was signed to export Iran's gas to Iraq and Syria and then to Lebanon and the Mediterranean coasts," Iranian Deputy Oil Minister Javad Oji told FNA at the time.
Iranian and Syrian energy officials had earlier endorsed an agreement to construct a pipeline for transferring Iran's natural gas to the Middle-Eastern country.
"The strategic gas pipeline will transfer gas from Iran to Iraq, Syria, and the Mediterranean Sea, which will also be connected to the Arab gas pipeline," Syrian Oil Minister Sufian Allaw said in January.
He made the remarks during a meeting with his former Iranian counterpart Massoud Mir-Kazzemi in the Syrian capital, Damascus.
Iraq agreed to participate in the gas project in August.
Allaw further explained that the two sides also discussed the transfer of three million cubic meters of Iran's gas to Syria per day via Turkey.
Syria has the smallest gas deposits in the Middle East after Bahrain and its oil will run out within 18 years.
