Prospects of absorption-type unification of 2 Koreas higher than last year
SEOUL (Yonhap)- The prospects of the two Koreas becoming unified through absorption grew from last year while the chances of a negotiated unification declined, according to a survey of security experts released Tuesday.
The result appears to reflect persisting tensions on the divided peninsula.
The "unification clocks," released by Seoul's state-run Korea Institute for National Unification, showed that the clock for absorption-type unification has moved to point at 5:30 a.m. this year from last year's 5:20 a.m.
A time closer to 12 o'clock means higher chances of unification, and the result of the survey means that the prospects of the capitalist South absorbing the impoverished communist North grew from last year.
The clock for negotiated unification, meanwhile, moved backward to point at 3:31 a.m. from last year's 3:45 a.m.
The think tank releases the unification clocks every year based on a survey of experts. This year's survey polled 80 analysts.
