Two Hyundai cars rank among top 10 best-sellers in U.S.
SEOUL (Yonhap) - South Korea's top automaker Hyundai Motor Co. said Tuesday that its two passenger cars made the list of the top 10 best-selling models in the United States this year.
Hyundai sold 156,580 units of its mid-size sedan Sonata in the U.S., one of the world's leading car markets, in the January-August period, ranking eighth in terms of shipments.
Hyundai also delivered 133, 536 units of the Elantra compact to the U.S. market, ranking as the 10th best-selling model, the company said.
The automaker expected that the two models will likely make the final top 10 list in the U.S. for all of 2011 should the current pace of brisk sales continue down the road.
Hyundai predicted its U.S. sales of the Sonata to surpass the 200,000 mark for the first time this year.
During the eight-month period, Toyota's Camry was the top-selling passenger car in the U.S. with 204,670 units shipped, followed by Nissan's Altima with 176,908 and Toyota's Corolla with 170,744, according to industry sources.
Meanwhile, Kia Motors Corp., Hyundai's smaller affiliate, said that it sold 88,613 units of its sport utility vehicle Sorento R in the January-August period, ranking eighth in the SUV segment.
