Iran, Russia Discuss Expansive Cooperation in Oil, Gas Sectors

TEHRAN (FNA)- Russian Energy Minister Sergei Shmatko said Tehran and Moscow are discussing different projects to expand mutual cooperation in the oil and gas sectors.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, Shmatko noted his Sunday meeting with Iranian Oil Minister Rostam Qassemi, and said, "During the meeting, we studied very interesting projects on expanding the two countries' cooperation in the oil and gas sector."

He further stated that Iran and his country hold coherent views about the development of the Caspian Sea region, and added, "We believe that infrastructural development in the Caspian region, including transportation of hydrocarbon substances, is related to each and every one of the Caspian Sea littoral states, and the Iranian oil minister specifically mentioned that any kind of infrastructural development in the transportation of hydrocarbon reserves in the Caspian Sea should first undergo environmental studies and tests, the results of which must then be approved by the littoral states."

"We believe that projects like boosting oil output in Iranian fields through Russian technologies, specially old and heavy crude fields, are interesting and hold good prospects," he added.

Asked if Tehran and Moscow have reached an agreement on the presence of the Russian Gazprom Company in the exploitation of Iran's Azar field, Shmatko said, "We have concluded an agreement to decide in a month time if Gazprom will take part in the development and exploitation of Azar oil field."

Shmatko arrived in Tehran on Sunday to hold meetings with Iranian officials and attend a ceremony to mark the official launch of Iran's first nuclear power plant in the Southern port city of Bushehr on Monday.

The Bushehr nuclear power plant officially joined Iran's national grid with an initial 40% of power generation capacity.

The power plant will gradually reach its utmost power for the generation of 1,000mw of electricity.

Iran and Russia enjoy friendly ties and have signed numerous agreements in various fields in recent years.

In June, a group of Iranian officials and lawmakers, who were in Moscow for the 11th International Oil and Gas Exhibition, conferred with Russian officials on ways to expand the two countries' cooperation in the field of energy.

The Iranian delegation, including lawmakers and energy officials, and the Russian authorities underlined the necessity for the expansion of joint investment and cooperation in oil and gas sectors of both countries.
