S. Korean military symphony to perform in U.S. for first overseas concert

SEOUL (Yonhap) - South Korea's military orchestra will perform in the U.S. later this month to start off an international tour commemorating multinational participation in the Korean War, the defense ministry said Wednesday.
The Korean National Military Symphony will travel to California from Sept. 19 to 28 and hold five concerts as part of its tour of countries that sent troops to the 1950-53 Korean War. The symphony was founded in January last year and has done 14 concerts in South Korea. This will be its first overseas appearance.
"We will invite Korean War veterans to our U.S. concerts and commemorate their dedication and sacrifice," the ministry said in a statement. "The symphony's tour through countries that fought in the Korean War will show our gratitude, and is expected to contribute to furthering military exchanges."
The first show will be next Tuesday at Camp Pendleton, a U.S. Marine Corps base. The symphony will also kick off the Korean Festival in Los Angeles next Thursday.
The ministry said the city of Irvine, California, whose mayor, Kang Suk-hee, is Korean-American, and the Los Angeles Korean Festival Foundation formally invited the band.
