S. Korea's rice production likely to drop this year

SEOUL, Sept. 14 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's rice production is expected to drop slightly from a year earlier this year due to unfavorable weather and shrinking farmland, a government official said Wednesday.
The country's rice production is expected to reach some 4.26 million tons, compared to 4.29 million tons produced last year, according to the official from the Ministry of Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.
"Crop yields are expected to be better than last year but overall production will likely drop from last year as the area of land for rice farming shrank from 890,000 hectares to 850,000 hectares this year," the official said.
The government earlier expected a larger drop to some 4.18 million tons, citing unusually heavy rains during this year's monsoon season.
The expected rice production of 4.26 million tons will leave a surplus of 80,000 tons as the country's total rice consumption is expected to reach 4.18 million tons, the ministry official said.
