Iranian veterans honored at Iran Cinema Celebration

TEHRAN, Sept.14(MNA) -- The Iran Cinema Celebration paid tribute to four veterans in its fifteenth edition during a ceremony held at Tehran’s Eyvan-e Shams Theater on September 12.

Ali Zarrin, former director of the Institute for the Intellectual Development of Children and Young Adults (IIDCYA), Masud Behnam, the first cineaste to introduce Dolby Surround Sound in Iranian cinema, as well as filmmaker Kamal Tabrizi and actor Davud Rashidi were honored at the ceremony.

The festival is held annually to celebrate Iran’s National Cinema Day (Sept. 12) and is sponsored by the House of Cinema. However, the major part of the event is due to be held on September 16.

The award ceremony began with screening a music video produced for Zarrin in which cineastes Abbas Kiarostami, Fereshteh Taerpur, Vahid Nikkhah-Azad and animator Nureddin Zarrinkelk had spoken.

“IIDCYA experienced the best years during Zarrin’s management and many good films were made in those days when burning rolls of films and deleting old memories of Iran’s cinema was common,” secretary of the celebration Kiumars Purahmad had said earlier in his speech.

Recalling the good old days, Zarrin accepted his lifetime achievement award and said, “I had a share in coordinating the great men of cinema in those days and I am happy God gave me the power to do so.”

Rashidi was the second who received the lifetime achievement award. He only made a short remark and said, “I express my thanks to the House of Cinema. I have been a member of the house since its establishment and I, too, am proud of it.”

The third was Behnam who expressed hope that God protects all against the curse of lying and vanity.

A music video depicting a scene in which some cineastes are trying to make Tabrizi laugh was screened next. In it, Tabrizi said, “I don’t laugh because the individual who is not happy, can not laugh. I am not happy because you are not happy.”

In receiving his award, Tabrizi said that there are other cineastes that more deserve to receive lifetime achievement awards.

“We are seeing times in which some (cineastes) are not allowed to work. Some get production licenses, but are not given screening permission. This is while others easily get both production and screening licenses. The discrimination hurts every one’s soul,” Tabrizi said.

A screenplay must be approved by the Culture Ministry to obtain a production license in Iran. In addition, the film’s producer must apply for a screening license from the ministry for a domestic or foreign premiere.

“If you can ot talk with the managers, you can talk with God. God doesn’t like oppression and advocates for the oppressed,” he concluded.
