Make best effort to give Chinese tourists good image of Korea

(Yonhap Editorial)

SEOUL, Sept. 14 (Yonhap) -- Over 10,000 Chinese tourists will visit South Korea between Tuesday and Sept. 28, marking the largest number of tourists coming from the country. Tourist industry sources said Wednesday that 11,000 Chinese tourists will come to South Korea to visit Jeju Island and other spots in eight batches due to travel deals offered by Baojian, China's leading seller of health products. The number of Chinese tourists will exceed the 8,000 tourists that visited the resort island of Jeju last year while being sponsored by Amway.
According to Jeju Province, the Chinese tourists will need a total of 62 Boeing 737 jets, 280 large buses and 15,000 hotel rooms. Jeju officials expect the visitors to spend 40 billion won on hotels, restaurants and shopping centers in Jeju during the cited period and create an economic effect worth 90 billion won. The Chinese tourists will spend two nights in Seoul.
The visit is the fruit of hard work by the Korea Tourism Organization and Jeju Province. Baojian had sent tens of hundreds of Chinese consumers to Thailand in 2005 and Taiwan in 2009 in incentive travel programs. For the 2011 incentive travel, the company thought of several countries, including Australia, Japan and Malaysia as destinations for their loyal consumers.
Since last October, the Jeju Province and the tourism organization has made strenuous efforts to attract travelers to South Korea by actively publicizing the inherited natural resources of Jeju and Korea's cultural merits like the Korean Wave. The South Korean embassy in China offered the best conveniences in issuing visas for those Chinese travelers while Jeju Province designated a road in Jeju City as Baojian Road and offered welcoming ceremonies for Chinese tourists coming to Jeju.
The competition among South Korea and other Southeast Asian countries, including Japan and Taiwan, to attract more Chinese tourists is expected to become fiercer in the future. This year we won the competition, but we can lose in the future.
The world countries are paying attention to the potential of the so-called MICE industry, which stands for meeting, incentive travel, convention and exhibition. The MICE industry has larger potential for tourists and its economic effect than any other industry, and the incentive travel market has the most potential. As travel expenditures are mostly covered by sponsoring companies, tourists are very likely to spend more money during their stay.
The head of Baojian reportedly expressed his wish to offer another travel program to Jeju Island in two to three years. It is very important to give a good first impression to the Chinese tourists so that the future incentive travel plan will be realized.
Being unkind and ripping off the tourists at hotels, restaurants and other places should not happen, while attractive tourist programs and products that suit the Chinese tourists' tastes should be developed in order to make them want to visit the country again. Chinese people regard South Korea as a very attractive tourist destination due to its geographical proximity. The government and local tourist industry should give their best effort to make the maximum use of the geographical merit and attract as many Chinese tourists as possible.
